Nampak, a packaging firm listed on the JSE, disclosed to its shareholders on Tuesday that it has encountered a cyberattack, whereby an unidentified third party breached its IT systems.
In an announcement released through the JSE's stock exchange news service, Nampak stated that it has initiated measures to contain, assess, and address the incident. Despite the breach, the company underscored its implementation of robust security protocols.
"Nampak is actively engaged in ascertaining the extent of the breach, restoring the integrity of its information systems, and mitigating any potential further risks," the company asserted.
Moreover, Nampak affirmed its collaboration with both local and global cybersecurity experts, along with its proficient in-house IT team, to manage the response process effectively.
The company clarified that the breach has not affected its manufacturing facilities and operations, which remain operational albeit with some manual adjustments as necessary. It has transitioned to backup manual controls to sustain operations during this period.
Nampak has committed to working closely with its suppliers and customers to contain the impact of the incident and ensure uninterrupted product delivery.
Regarding compliance with data protection regulations, Nampak informed that it has initiated the requisite notifications to the Information Regulator under the Protection of Personal Information Act (Popia). Further disclosures will be made as the investigation advances, including notifications to potentially affected individuals in accordance with PoPiA requirements.
However, Nampak did not offer insights into the motives behind the attack or the method by which the perpetrators gained access to its systems.
