SABC TV Licences Scam

Alert: Sophisticated SABC TV Licence Phishing Scams Targeting South Africans

At StormWarning, we are committed to keeping South Africans informed and secure. We have recently analyzed a sophisticated phishing campaign targeting TV Licence holders that appears highly convincing but is, in fact, a fraudulent attempt to steal your data and money.

Understanding the Scam

Attackers are sending professional-looking emails that claim to be from the SABC "TV Licence Renewals Department." These emails often include:

  • A "Settlement Offer": They promise a large discount on your "outstanding" balance to create a sense of urgency.

  • The Link Trick: The links provided often lead to the real tvlic.co.za domain. This is a deliberate tactic to lower your guard and make you trust the fraudulent email content.

  • The Reply Trap: They encourage you to reply directly to the email to "set up a debit order," which connects you directly with the scammers.

Why This Is Dangerous

Even if the landing page is the legitimate website, the email itself is a threat. By engaging with these emails, you confirm your email address is active, potentially leading to further, more targeted attacks. Furthermore, any payment made via "instructions" in the email—rather than your own independent navigation—is likely being diverted to a criminal account.

How to Protect Yourself

Use our simple "Trust but Verify" Checklist:

  1. Never click email links: Never use links in unsolicited emails to make payments.

  2. Independent Navigation: Always type www.tvlic.co.za manually into your browser.

  3. The "No-Pressure" Test: The SABC does not send unsolicited settlement "deals" via email. If an offer seems too good to be true, it is.

  4. Header Inspection: Check for inconsistencies like "Softfail" status in your email headers.

  5. Channel Verification: Use only official, verified support channels.

Stay vigilant. If you receive an email that looks suspicious, do not reply, do not click, and delete it immediately. Always verify your balance directly through the official, secure SABC portal. For more safety updates and security alerts, visit stormwarning.co.za.
