China playing the cybersecurity long game

China Cybersecurity

China's leadership is gearing up to elevate its cyberwarfare capabilities to a new level. Cybersecurity, while previously on the back burner, is now a priority for China, aligning with its 13th Five-Year Plan to establish a robust framework for defending against cyberattacks and launching cyber offensives by 2025.

Wu Yunkun, President of the Qi An Xin Group, emphasises the importance of national security in cyberspace and recognises that informatization is essential for individuals, enterprises, society, and the country.

Wu is concerned about China's supply-chain vulnerabilities and aims to develop "asymmetric" capabilities in the cyber domain. In line with this, both Chinese and American cyberwar strategists are exploring ways to target each other's sensitive supply chains in cyberspace.

China aims to leverage emerging technologies like quantum computing and artificial intelligence to enhance its offensive cyber capabilities and safeguard critical systems and data. This aligns with China's tradition of rapid and innovative development, which has propelled it to become the world's second-largest economy.

Wu's company is pioneering an "endogenous security framework" as part of China's evolving cybersecurity strategy, reconfiguring networks under attack to thwart potential hackers. Securing data flows has become integral to China's strategy, leading to recent crackdowns on companies like Didi, amid concerns about data security.

China's goal is to surpass the US in network security and information technology capabilities. As competition intensifies between China and the US, network security and denying access to critical data become key battlegrounds in the evolving Sino-American quasi-war.

China seeks to strengthen its cyber defenses, capture exclusive markets in IT services and equipment, and reduce reliance on external sources. While the US currently enjoys advantages in cyberspace, China is rapidly closing the gap, underscoring the need for American technical experts to remain vigilant and innovative.

To maintain its lead in cyberspace, the US must deploy new technologies like quantum computing and artificial intelligence to counter Chinese cyber threats and protect critical networks. In the absence of proactive measures, China's growing capabilities pose a significant challenge to American dominance in cyberspace.
